Primer: do you need it?
Do you actually need a primer? Whether you wear a daily full face or you’re a makeup minimalist, you may wonder if you even need a primer. What do primers do?
Primers basically smoothen your skin for your makeup & make your makeup last longer. A primer can be a cream, gel, pomade or lotion, and just like a foundation, primers can create a matte, dewy or satin finish. Primers can be for your foundation, eyelids, lips, eyelashes, hair and nails. In this post, three main types of foundation primers will be laid out: Matte, Dewy and Satin Finish Primers
Matte Primers
Matte Primers
Matte primers can help keep oil at bay while creating a smooth canvas of you skin. You can wear your primer alone or prep your skin for foundation by using a matte primer. I personally love wearing a matte primer for my textured skin as it gives it an ultra smooth appearance.
Dewy Primers
Dewy Primers
In cold or hot weather, dewy primers give a natural, healthy glow. Some provide an extra grip and hydration helping your makeup to stay on without allowing grease to peep through and keeping dry patches at bay.
Satin Finish Primers
Satin finish primers are best for all skin types, since they tend to be correcting. They are great if you do not want a matte finish or an extra glowy look. They give a natural skin finish to your foundation. I typically never use these alone since but with a matte, satin or dewy foundation.
The main purpose of primer is to even out your skin texture and to allow your foundation to stay on for a long time. So, primers are not absolutely necessary if you do not plan on wearing your foundation for an extended period of time or if your skin has a great texture.
