Beauty, Rest & a Different View: My Favorite Kind of Day Off

Yesterday was my one day off, and I almost wasted it. I almost stayed in bed, doomscrolling, reorganizing my closet, half-creating content I was too tired to love. You know those days?

Instead, I did something different. Something soft. Something smart.

I got dressed — no real plan, just the urge to step outside my routine. I floated the idea to my family (I was honestly good either way — solo dates hit different), and my husband decided to come too. We packed a $20 picnic from Lidl, our first time there, and it was actually kind of cute. Then headed to the U.S. Botanic Garden with zero expectations and full hearts.

This post isn’t just about what I wore or what I ate. It’s about reconnecting to beauty when you’re overstimulated. It’s for my fellow smart, tired, do-it-all women who need a little luxury in the middle of their week.

I’ve included the exact makeup routine, outfit links, and even the scent stack I wore (the compliments were non-stop). And if you're feeling inspired? I’d love it if you subscribed to my newsletter or used the links below to try a product. That’s what helps me keep creating.

Pedal Pushers & Peplum: A Summer Outfit That Works Overtime

I saw a look from one of my favorite beauty creators — a reminder of the clothes I used to wear in my college years.
I don’t know if you can relate, but my body has changed a lot since then. Still, I thought: why not wear what makes me feel happy?

So I did: pedal pushers, butter-yellow soft peplum top, and flat shoes, which matched my mood perfectly.

I added my limited-edition Fe Noel scarf, these Prada-inspired sunnies, and gold hoops (they’re great for sensitive ears).

What held the look together, though?
My makeup. Built to hold up against D.C. humidity, mist, and movement — without fading or sliding.

Blush First, Glow Always: My Go-To Summer Beauty Stack

I kept the makeup light, fresh, and built to last — skin that still looked like skin, even in heat, humidity, and misting fans in the garden. I was going for “off-duty glow,” not full glam. And this routine gave me exactly that: a soft flush, clean definition, and products that held up from mid-afternoon sunshine to golden hour picnics.

Some of these were gifted in PR (thank you to Armani, Kosas, and Rare Beauty!), but all thoughts are my own. The Milk Skin Tint and Rare Beauty Gloss were personal purchases, and I’d absolutely buy them again.

Here’s the full breakdown of everything I wore (and loved):

Let me know if you want the full breakdown of the skin prep that made everything stay put — from misty gardens to midday sun.

Foundation-Free, But Covered Where It Counts

Milk Makeup Sunshine Skin Tint
I bought this with my own coins, and wow — it delivers. Breathable, radiant coverage that doesn’t slide around or get patchy, even after hours in D.C. heat. Lightweight, but evens everything out. Perfect for warm-weather skin days.

Concealer That Doubles as Brightener

Armani Luminous Silk Concealer (gifted)
Under the eyes, I let it sit for a few seconds before blending, a quick tip that makes all the difference for coverage and lift. Doesn’t crease. Still looked fresh hours later.

The Viral Blush That Actually Deserves the Hype

Armani Luminous Silk Liquid Blush (gifted)
I layered two shades to create a blush-forward ombre blush look. These blushes are so easy to use. It’s one that I recommend for beginners and pros. Creamy, radiant, blendable. It melted into my skin without caking or fading.

Mascara That Doesn't Budge, Flake or Smudge

Kosas The Big Clean Mascara (gifted)
I wanted to really test this in humidity, and it passed. No smudges, no flakes, just clean, separated lashes that looked lifted and soft all day. The bristles allow you to create more volume and length depending on how you comb your lashes.

Glossy, Glassy Lips — Minus the Stick

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil in Spark
I know lip oils are having a moment, but this one stands out. It gives the perfect glassy finish, but feels like a balm. Hydrating, not sticky. And the shimmer? Ultra fine and wearable.

Effortless Eyes with Clean Definition

Lancôme Idôle Liquid Liner
Super inky, super smooth. I added a little flick — not dramatic, just enough to elongate the eye — then topped it with faux mini lashes for a subtle lift. Breezy but intentional.

Set It and Sweat-Proof It

One/Size On ’Til Dawn Setting Spray
A must. It turned everything from “fresh” to “fully set.” Locked in the blush, sealed in the skin tint, and gave me a satin-matte finish that lasted even with walking, sweating, and unexpected misting fans.

Everything I used is linked below (some affiliate links, which support my work — thank you!) if you want to recreate the look for your sunny day off.

My Summer Scent Stack: Soft Skin, Solar Heat, Compliments Galore

This is the fragrance combo I wore — and I got stopped twice by strangers asking what I was wearing:

  • Phlur Beach Kin Body Mist (affiliate) – I spray this first, all over. It smells like warm skin, solar vanilla, and sweet air after the beach.

  • Kayali Limoncello (travel size) – Layered on pulse points: inner elbows, chest, behind the knees. Like lemon sorbet on sun-kissed skin.

  • L’Occitane Hand Cream in Neroli Orchidée – The soft, floral hug that lingers as I reapply throughout the day.

Tip: If you’re not into full-size perfumes in your bag, the travel Phlur mist + Kayali mini are made for your purse. No spills, just vibes.

Our Simple, Chic $20 Date in D.C.

My husband and I didn’t have a plan — just the vibe.
We popped into Lidl for the first time (we’re usually Costco people), grabbed pastries (which were surprisingly delicious), and particularly enjoyed the currant roll. We also got a bag of juicy tangerines, chips, and kefir (which was filling and delicious). A great ice cream alternative. Then we headed to the U.S. Botanic Garden.

The moment I stepped into the humid, misty warmth of the tropical greenhouse, I was transported:
Jungle trails. Tonka beans. Cocoa pods. My Caribbean childhood was in full bloom.

The orchids reminded me of my youth — hiking through the mountains, swimming in lagoons, the air scented with tropical flowers and fruits. My blush stayed radiant. And this natural deodorant, Salt & Stone, did not flinch.

From there, we found a grassy spot near the National Mall. Spread out our picnic blanket, cracked open our snacks, and let the breeze find us. We settled into the grass and played a little game, pretending we were on an early date, asking each other questions like we were still getting to know one another.

We even played a game: “Who are you today?”
We pretended not to know each other. Asked: What do you dream about? What version of yourself are you becoming?

Sometimes the best dates are the ones where nothing is planned — except the softness.

Sometimes the best dates are the ones where nothing is planned.

We came home with full hearts and the good kind of tired — the kind that only comes from being outside, laughing, lounging, living. I wanted to hold on to that feeling just a little longer. So I eased into my wind-down routine, a gentle thank-you to my body for carrying me through the day.

Nighttime Routine: Clean Skin, Cozy Vibes, Real Rest

I started with the Dr. Dennis Gross Cleansing Oil — it melts off all your makeup without disturbing your lash strips. Then I followed with the Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser for a deep, refreshing clean. I stepped into the shower and afterward, slipped on my Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask while massaging in the Kiehl’s Body Cream. No book tonight — just my breath, and a whispered prayer before sleep.

I hope this brought you a little calm (or a click to add to cart )
