With my experience creating content for social media, I will start right away by telling you, you don’t need all the equipment to get started. If you have an internet connection, a smartphone, and a laptop you can get started! I am a content creator on social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest since 2017. Now I am on even more social media platforms such as this Blog, TikTok, Super Great, and Newness (a live-streaming app). In this post, I will be sharing all the equipment that I use.

Photo, Video & Audio

For pictures and videos, I do use all of these products. Depending on the quality and the logistics of the content I am creating, I may use one or all of these on one piece of content.

  1. Camera

  2. Phone

  3. Tablet

  4. Laptop

  5. Desktop Computer

  6. Microphone

These devices offer different levels of quality, and you might be thinking you want professional-level quality for all social media platforms. Well, that might not be necessary. The device that you use depends on the kind of content you are creating, as well as, the platform that you will like to post it on. For example, if you were to post a photo/ video dump about, ‘A Day in The Life, for Instagram: your audience may be happier to see your mobile phone-level quality photos and videos, instead of a professional-grade camera. Having your cell phone and taking clips of your day is more relatable than having a professional camera and crew with you, filming your day.

A tablet is phenomenal for editing long-form content like YouTube and Facebook videos. Tablets are also great for creating shorter form content such as YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok since they operate as mobile devices. The benefits of the tablet are:

  • It’s small enough to take with you and edit on the go,

  • It’s capable of using mobile editing apps. Mobile editing apps make it easier for you to process and post your content faster.

  • The quality of images taken on your tablet will be similar to your cell phone. Like your phone, you can shoot Youtube videos on your tablet, but

  • Video processing apps on tablets are better than your phone. The range of what you can edit on a tablet is a lot wider than using your phone. For this reason, it’s worth investing more in a tablet vs. your mobile phone for content creation.

laptop

Laptops are tried and true for content creators. I have been using this laptop since 2016 for editing youtube videos, writing blog posts, email correspondence, and most of the processes of content creation. There are whispers that tablets will soon make laptops obsolete. I will continue to hold on to my laptop because I personally find it to be more comfortable to use than my tablet. The screen is large enough, the keyboard is large and user-friendly, there are several ports to connect all my other gadgets and the processor is fast which allows for speedy editing. I can have several screens on at the same time. Another plus is the convenience of being able to do most of my content creation functions anywhere. I also love being able to attach any external storage. While this device is one of my favorite devices to use for content creation, I don’t think any of these devices can beat the power of the desktop computer (PC).

It is undeniable how powerful a PC for video and photo editing is. Using this PC will drastically improve the quality, time, and performance of the content that you create. If you are creating photo or video content, Video editing software can be incredibly taxing on your device. The resolution, speed, and ease of use are all important. The right PC will speed up your editing time considerably. While there are several models on the market, over the years the Apple iMac Pro has remained number one for a reason. However, the price tag on the Apple iMac Pro is difficult to ignore. Two things to help you choose which PC is right for your is your budget and the type of content you want to create. I have been using this PC since 2020. It has remained in the top 2 computers for video and photo editing among many well-respected tech blogs.

After spending a lot of time timer researching and considering my budget, I chose this PC. My desktop computer has the fastest processing and delivers the highest quality of any of my other devices. These all have different storage options. The phone and tablet come with pre-determined storage options but I think it’s worth it to use a cloud storage option. For the camera, I use an SD card. I prefer buying larger SD cards as they hold a lot of footage so you can take several hours of content without having to continuously switch out your SD card.

To protects my camera, phone, or tablet. What you use to hold your camera will need to be much more sturdy than what you use to hold your phone and tablet. These are the tripods that I use to hold my:

  1. Camera Tripod

  2. Phone Tripod

  3. Tablet Tripod

Lighting

To create the best content lighting is critical. Lighting can give a mood and drastically change the quality of your photo or video. For days when natural light is not cooperating, I use my affordable ring light and this lighting system. I do plan to switch out and get this more compact lighting system.

There are more supporting apps and equipment the will help your content creation life flow. Let me know in the comments what you will like to know more about or what devices that you are currently using.
