Natural Hair ‘Wash’ & Style {Curly / Coily / Kinky Hair Edition.}

How to wash and style natural hair can be quick and easy. 4 Easy steps to take you from tangled to a sleek pony tail will be effortless.

Natural Hair is hair that has not been changed by a chemical process such as texturizers or relaxers.

Kinky/Curly/Coily hair tangles very quickly.

Kinky 4c hair is the curliest hair of all hair types.

In this post I’m referring to Natural ‘Black Hair’. The way hair naturally grows without any chemical additives.

Using heat to temporarily change the curl pattern of hair is one of the most common ways to temporarily change the texture of hair. The hair will still be considered natural hair since it will revert to its natural state when it gets wet.

I’ve put my hair through a lot recently. I have not brushed, combed or added products in the past few days. I’ve been sleeping without a scarf or bonnet on cotton pillow cases, so it is extremely tangled. I have natural 4c hair, which is the curliest/ kinkiest hair type. Kinky / Curly / Coil hair tangles very quickly, especially when it’s dry.

I should also mention that I am extremely lazy when it comes to hair styling and I am always seeking undemanding ways to style my natural hair. I therefore look for the easiest, fastest and (mostly) safest way to groom my tresses.

Here are my Easy (Lazy) steps to detangle, ‘pre-poo’ and style my natural hair.

Step 1. Condition, Condition, Condition.

I apply conditioner to my hair while it is dry. Yip! Dry!

I’m using Sebastian Drench Moisturizing Conditioner to coat my hair since it is extremely dry and tangled. This is a great way to detangle your hair without stressing out your strands, add extra moisture. It also creates stronger strands, resulting in less breakage. ‘Washing’ dry hair with conditioner is sometimes called a Pre-Poo.

I am finger detangling my hair. You can use a wide tooth comb, paddle brush or wet brush to help you through this process. These are some of my favorite detangling tools. Whether you are finger detangling or using one of these tools, be sure to detangle from the end of your hair to the root.

I like using the pre-poo method because it cuts the time spent washing in half. It also prevents the ends of your hair from being dried out through over exposure to shampoo suds.

Once your hair is coated and detangled, you will see a clear difference in your curl pattern from being dry to being bouncy.

Rinse your hair thoroughly to avoid product residue. Your hair should spring back to life after this.

I use It’s a 10 Haircare Silk Express Miracle Silk Leave-In which is an amazing de-tangler that protects against frizz. It adds a silky feel and a glossy shine. I love that it has a spray pump, which allows for easy application to my locks.

For our third conditioner, add a generous amount of Cantu Shea butter, Leave-In Conditioner repair cream, which is great for natural hair or chemically treated hair. It strengthens fragile hair, reduces frizz and adds moisture. You can use this as an overnight hair mask. Today I’m using it to render my hair manageable.

Step 2. Sectioning

Using my favorite paddle brush to  further detangle and smooth my hair.  You can separate your hair into 2 sections using a Rat Tail comb and securing your sections with Goody Women’s Athletic Sweat Elastics. I like these elastics because they do not tug or snap your hair. Smoothing my hair into sections with a boar bristle. Boar Bristle is preferred since it will not tear your hair. You can even use a boar bristle brush to gently massage your scalp which increases blood flow and promotes thicker hair.

Step 3. Smooth & Combine Sections

Smooth a generous amount of Eco Styling Gel with Argan Oil over the sections of your hair. You can remove the elastic to fully saturate the top of the section of hair that you are working on. When you are satisfied that you have saturated both sections of hair with the gel, combine the two sections together behind your head.  I further define my center part using more gel and a rat tail comb.

Step 4. Rock Your Pony Tail

Rock your own braided up or puff ponytail, attach a draw-string ponytail or even do a long braid.

Today I chose a long braid. Let me know if you want a sleek braided ponytail tutorial. You’re done!!
